Cannabis STRs

Cannabis STR typing

Cannabis sativa is on the one hand the most widely consumed illicit drug and therefore the subject of one of the most common drug law offenses in Europe; on the other hand, it is also increasingly used for medical purposes (lit). Verifying legal marijuana products and identifying links between illegal Cannabis plantation and confiscated stolen cannabis are one of the most forensic issues that requires individualisation of plantlets/seedlings using STR markers. A more recent application is differentiation of "medical cannabis" prescribed by a physician/doctor versus “non-medical cannabis” when securing plants from potential offenders. For some years now, the Department KT46 - Material and Microtraces Biology has also been able to evaluate plant samples of cannabis from seizures by molecular genetics and to check them for a common origin or cultivation. That includes comparison of the rest of a cannabis plantation (sticks, roots) with cannabis flower material on sale.
